Automotive Retail and the Recession – The Findings

Our dealer management systems are industry-specific and tailored to provide excellent IT solutions for the modern day car dealer. In order to understand our market, we have been conducting the necessary research. The financial downturn has affected every business, from the local corner shop, the popular city centre café, to big designer clothing brands and big corporations. The automotive retail industry has suffered too and here are some key findings as provided by the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry):-

  • Vehicle manufacturers were hit hard as the UK officially entered into recession in 2008 and UK car production decreased year on year by 55.3% in April 2009.
  • A significant drop of 24.8% (since the year before) was recorded in new car registrations in May 2009.

The UK is no longer in recession. However, times are still tough and we all need a positive business outlook for 2010. The IMI is currently encouraging and promoting the employment of young apprenticeships, so things could be looking up with employment figures. National Apprenticeship Week is a celebration of talent and cultivating the skills of young people. It’s important to have a competitive edge during such a difficult time.
