Grain: To Feed Cars or People?
Amazing but true – last year in the US, enough grain to feed 330 million people for an entire year, was used to fuel cars instead!
Grain can be turned into ethanol in order to fuel cars, and in America last year this initiative was taken to an extreme with enough grain to feed 330 million people, calculated at average consumption levels. New data from the US department of agriculture revealed that this accounts for 25% of the total grain crop in the US....... It's clear that the world of motors is changing, with electric cars and low fuel cars growing in popularity. But could this 'biofuel revolution' have an adverse effect on world food supplies? In 2009, one quarter of America’s maize and corn was being used for motor fuel. Are people and cars really competing for grain? The motoring world is being transformed with the world’s changing outlook on environmental care, and with 2010 being the International Year of Biodiversity, the environment is more significant than ever.
